House File 437, signed into law by Governor Kim Reynolds last June, requires the creation of the center and the appointment of an advisory council. The bill also states that the center will provide scholarship on the intellectual foundation of free societies, the principles, ideals and institutions of the American constitutional order and the foundations of responsible leadership and informed citizenship. In addition, the center is tasked with fostering civic engagement among university students and faculty and coordinating with the Center for Cyclone Civics at ISU and the Center for Civic Education at UNI.

In July, the Board of Regents appointed Luciano de Castro, UI professor of economics, to serve as the center’s interim executive director.
