Highlights
Richard E. Gibson was appointed as Director of Planning and Administrative Services at the University of Iowa. Gibson was hired as a student services employee at UI in 1960 and spent 40 years with the university. He retired as Associate Vice President and Director of the Facility Services Group in 2000. Gibson Square Park, near the UI Stanley Museum of Art and Main Library, was dedicated in his honor in 2002.
Iowa State’s request for the establishment of a center for non-destructive evaluation was referred to the Interinstitutional Committee on Educational Coordination because of its joint National Science Foundation and ISU funding. The ISU Center for Nondestructive Evaluation was formed later that year and continues operation in the Applied Sciences II building to this day.
Hansjoerg E.J.W. Kolder was appointed as acting head of the UI Department of Ophthalmology. Kolder would hold this position for one year until the appointment of Thomas Weingeist, who was head of the department until 2004. Kolder retired from clinical practice in 1995 after more than 20 years of teaching and performing ophthalmic surgery. The University’s Kolder Professorship in Best Disease Research and the Kolder Award for Excellence in Ophthalmology are named in his honor.
