Meeting Highlights
The Board appointed Claud Mahlon Fraleigh as professor and head of the UI Department of Periodontology in the College of Dentistry. Fraleigh was previously chair of the Periodontology Department at West Virginia and a retired Rear Admiral in the U.S. Navy who served in the Pacific Theater during the Second World War. His service was decorated by two Legion of Merit awards, a Silver Star, and a Prisoner of War Medal. Fraleigh’s leadership was foundational to the young department and crucial in helping UI establish its Periodontics program.
The Regents passed a revised budget for the forthcoming Student Union project at the State College of Iowa (UNI). Rather than expand the existing Commons space, the Board thought it better to create a new space. Where the new space would exist was up for debate, with President James Maucker’s preferred space just east of Rod Library winning out. The budget would rise three more times before the new Union opened for general use on April 7, 1969. It was renamed Maucker Union in March 1974.
Regent Rosenfield announced the death of Iowa State professor Carl J. Drake, who had served as department head and state entomologist from 1922-46. Since then, Drake had spent his time as a consultant to the Smithsonian Institute. Drake left most of his life savings and a large collection of insects to the Institute upon his death.
