The University of Iowa contingent was led by Dr. Peter Nathan, who was appointed Acting President of the University following Hunter Rawlings’s appointment as President of Cornell University. Mary Sue Coleman was unanimously appointed as the 18th UI President six days prior. Coleman served as UI President for 7 years before her appointment as the 13th President of the University of Michigan in 2002.

The Board approved the creation of the Center for Energy and Environmental Education (CEEE) at the University of Northern Iowa. The CEEE facility, completed during the Fall 1994 semester, was funded by a $4 million grant from the U.S. Department of Energy. Today, the CEEE building and center remain at UNI, offering technical assistance and educational programs to students and the public.

The Board approved the reappointment of Thomas Barton as Director of the Ames Laboratory. Barton was first appointed in 1988 and served as director until 2007. He also was director of Iowa State’s Institute for Physical Research and Technology (IPRT) from 1998 to 2007. Barton retired from ISU in 2012 after 45 years of service.

Iowa State’s Institute for International Cooperation in Animal Biologics (IICAB) received Board approval. A cooperative effort between ISU and the US Department of Agriculture, IICAB was established to improve the availability, safety and efficacy of animal vaccines throughout the world. IICAB remains active in the ISU College of Veterinary Medicine to this day.
