Highlights
The Board approved the formal creation of the Iowa State University College of Design. Board Office staff reported that ISU had been taking steps to establish a College of Design since the early 1960s and representatives from ISU noted that the major components of the college had already been established. Classes on landscape architecture, architecture drawing and history had been offered at ISU for nearly a century. This approval, along with previous approval of the Design Center Building, formalized the creation of the ISU College of Design.
The Board approved the appointment of Clayton Swenson as Chair of the ISU Department of Physics. Swenson joined the ISU faculty in 1955 after completing a degree at Harvard University and, notably, after a 20-month tenure at the Los Alamos National Laboratory working on the Manhattan Project. His input was instrumental in the construction of the Zaffarano Physics Addition and he headed the ISU Department of Physics until 1984. Swenson held the title of Distinguished Professor Emeritus at ISU until his death in 2018.
The Board approved the appointment of Charlotte E. Roderuck as Director of the World Food Institute. Roderuck’s ISU career spanned 40 years, with research focusing on nutrition for women and children. Her 1973 ISU Commencement address was the first by a woman since Carrie Chapman Catt delivered remarks in 1930. House Roderuck in Geoffroy Hall and the Charlotte E. Roderuck Faculty Fellowship are named in her honor. She also is enshrined in the Carrie Chapman Catt Hall Plaza of Heroines.
