Meeting Highlights
The meeting was the first for Regents Harry Hagemann of Waverly and Roy Stevens of Ottumwa. Hagemann replaced Roy Louden, who had served since 1939 until his death in a car accident in February 1951. Stevens replaced Halstead Carpenter of Monticello, who passed away in December 1950 from heart failure after a period of declining health. Hagemann would serve as the Board’s sixth president from 1958-63. In 1965, Governor Harold Hughes would appoint Thomas Louden to his father Roy’s seat on the Board.

The Board approved the promotion of Duane C. Spriesterbach to associate professor. Spriesterbach would go on to serve as Dean of the UI Graduate College from 1965-89 and interim president following the departure of longtime president Willard (Sandy) Boyd in 1981. During his tenure at UI, Spriesterbach became a nationally-recognized pioneer in cleft palate research.

In addition, the Board promoted Albert Hieronymus as associate professor. Hieronymus would author and develop the Iowa Test of Basic Skills (ITBS) throughout the 1970s and 1980s. The ITBS, now the Iowa Assessments, were created at UI in 1935 by Everett Lindquist and measure year-to-year growth of student academic skills throughout the country.
