Athletics projects to transform ISU, UI campuses
At its February meeting, the Board of Regents will consider approval of two projects that will transform the campuses at Iowa State University and the University of Iowa.
First, the Board will vote on permission to proceed with project planning for a gateway footbridge near Jack Trice Stadium in Ames. The bridge would span over University Boulevard and connect to the stadium’s east concourse, creating a safer pedestrian route between the stadium and parking. The project also includes new fencing and sidewalks in and around the parking lots east of the stadium. In addition, the bridge would serve as a substantial new gateway to the south edge of the Iowa State University campus. The estimated budget is $8-12 million and would be funded by athletics department operations and private giving.
“The pedestrian gateway bridge and elevated walkway will create a spectacular entrance to campus, as well as provide a much safer pathway for fans and students to enter and exit the east side of the stadium,” said ISU Director of Athletics Jamie Pollard. “Additionally, the pedestrian gateway will serve as a catalyst to the creation of the entertainment and cultural district the University is currently exploring.”
Additionally, the University of Iowa is seeking approval for a new, state-of-the-art wrestling training facility. The new facility will be located south of Carver-Hawkeye Arena and feature tunnel access to the arena. It will include 37,000 square feet of new space, including greatly expanded training space and a hall of champions honoring Hawkeye Wrestling’s greatest competitors.
“The Iowa wrestling program has a legendary history and we are committed to continuing its momentum,” said Gary Barta, Tippie Director of Athletics Chair at the UI. “This facility will have a significant impact on our wrestling program and athletics department.”
The proposed facility will be funded entirely by athletic department gifts. To date, the project has received over $9 million in gift commitments.
