Meeting Highlights
The Board approved a project request for the Education and Psychology Building, Unit 1 at UNI. With nearly $1.5 million in appropriations from the 61st and 62nd Iowa General Assemblies, and a pending federal grant for more than half a million dollars, the Board gave permission to proceed with project planning for a new education building designed to be “sufficiently flexible.” Building Unit 1 was expanded with Unit 2, approved two years later. Units 1 and 2 were completed and opened for general use in the early 1970s. Known simply as the Education Complex, the buildings were renamed the Schindler Education Complex in honor of Dr. Alvin Schindler in 1990.
UNI Vice President of Academic Affairs William Lang was appointed acting head of the Department of Psychology, in addition to his other duties. Though he was not a psychologist, Lang was tasked with overseeing the split of the Psychology Department from the Education and Psychology Department. This action was part of a broader restructuring of academic units as the State College of Iowa became the University of Northern Iowa in 1967. Lang’s leadership and decades of service to UNI culminated in the renaming of UNI’s Old Aud Building as Lang Hall on September 8, 1994.
The Board approved project description and plans for Engineering Building No. 2 at Iowa State. Originally presented as part of Iowa’s State’s 1963 Eight-Year Capital Improvement Master Plan, Engineering Building 2 would represent the final piece of the plan originally written to grow Iowa State into a footprint more fitting of the full state university it had become in 1959. Engineering Building 2 was completed in 1971 and named for George R. Town, ISU College of Engineering Dean from 1949-70, in 1973. The Board approved project planning for a new update of Town Engineering in 2021.
