Commons Modernization

For more than nine decades, the UNI Commons has stood beside the Campanile at the heart of campus. It has served as a dining hall, a student union and a gathering place that has hosted everything from campus traditions to Board of Regents meetings. 

At its June meeting, the Board will consider project description and design of a $33.2 million renovation that aims to give the commons a new lease on life.

Originally constructed in 1932, the Commons has not undergone substantial modernization since 1965. A 2023 building assessment identified significant deferred maintenance needs, including upgrades to HVAC, electrical, plumbing, and technology systems, as well as replacement of windows and the roof.
Funded through capital appropriations and institutional funds, gifts and grants, the proposed project will eliminate $13 million in deferred maintenance and modernize the building to host UNI’s Center for Civic Education and the forthcoming Chuck and Barbara Grassley Center.  These proposed renovations are intended to transform the Commons into a hub for civil discourse, free speech education and leadership development. 

The Iowa Legislature approved $1 million in FY26 and another $6 million in FY27, with state appropriations expected to cover 90 percent of the total cost. Further capital appropriations requests await future legislative action.

Construction is slated to run from fall 2026 through spring 2029.
