Statement from Board President Bruce Rastetter on Education Funding
The Board would like to thank the Governor and members of the General Assembly for the support that was shown to the universities and special schools this past legislative session. Of particular note, the Board is grateful for the $5.1 million added to the University of Northern Iowa’s base budget, as well as the approval of the Student Innovation Center at Iowa State University.
We understand the Governor’s rationale for vetoing the one‐time money. One‐time money is not what the Governor nor the Board had proposed and is not sustainable in the long term.
The Board is also proud of the collaborative work done by the universities, Governor, and the General Assembly to maintain a resident undergraduate tuition freeze for the past two years. The Board remains committed to maintaining a tuition freeze for the upcoming fall semester and will immediately start looking at where tuition levels should be for the Spring 2016 semester and beyond.
We look forward to working with the Governor and the General Assembly going forward to secure the level of funding that will ensure the highest quality education for our students.
