2016 Campus Safety and Security Summit a Success

October 26, 2016

The 2016 Campus Safety and Security Summit was held October 26, 2016 at Scheman Building at Iowa State University. The summit, which welcomed professionals in higher education and other fields to share best practices and information, featured three keynote presentations and 24 breakout sessions.

The summit was opened by a keynote from Dr. Gene Deisinger, managing partner at SIGMA Threat Management Associates, and continued throughout the morning with breakout sessions. Representatives from Iowa’s public universities, private colleges and community colleges joined in discussion covering sexual assault prevention, active shooter crisis management and mental health issues, among other topics.

“One of the significant parts of this event is the cross-section of people that it brings together,” said Jon Buse, vice president of student services at Kirkwood Community College. “When we first looked at developing this event two years ago, it was really about how you bring those different pieces of the education world together, be it universities or community colleges or private institutions. It’s not about one kind of institution or one kind of service, it really is looking at it from a multifaceted approach.”

Breakout sessions followed four tracks: Mental health, diversity and inclusion, violence prevention and response, and threat assessment. Session formats ranged from lectures to videos to hands-on participation.

Dr. Derrick Williams, assistant professor of speech communication at Cuyahoga Community College, and Dr. Shuaib Meacham, associate professor of curriculum and instruction at the University of Northern Iowa, delivered the lunch and afternoon keynotes, respectively.

The summit was hosted by the Iowa Board of Regents, the Iowa Association of Community Colleges Trustees, the Iowa Association of Independent Colleges and Universities, and the Iowa Coordinating Council for Post High School Education.
