October 19, 2016

The 2016 Campus Safety and Security Summit will be held October 26, 2016 from 9 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at Scheman Building at Iowa State University. Hosted by the Iowa Board of Regents, the Iowa Association of Community Colleges Trustees, the Iowa Association of Independent Colleges and Universities, and the Iowa Coordinating Council for Post High School Education, the Summit is designed to allow higher education and other professionals to share best practices and information.

“Providing safe and secure campus environments in an ever changing world is a top priority for all Iowans,” said Regent Sherry Bates, Chair of the Board of Regents Campus Safety and Security Subcommittee. “This year’s Summit is not only an opportunity for those in Iowa higher education, but also for K-12 and community agency representatives to share best practices and information about the important issue of student and campus safety.”

"Iowa is fortunate to have public and private institutions that work together for the citizens of Iowa and our greatest asset - the young people,” said Dr. John Sellars, President of Graceland University. “This workshop is a testament to the collaboration we share in the Iowa higher education.”

The theme for this year’s event is “Building Bridges with Partners”. The schedule features keynote presentations by Dr. Gene Deisinger, managing partner at SIGMA Threat Management Associates; Dr. Derrick Williams, assistant professor of speech communication at Cuyahoga Community College; and Dr. Shuaib Meacham, associate professor of curriculum and instruction at the University of Northern Iowa, accompanied by Waterloo students. Attendees will choose from breakout sessions representing four tracks: Mental health, diversity and inclusion, violence prevention and response, and threat assessment.

"Iowa's Community College Trustees value student and campus safety, and understand the benefit of community partnerships and joint campus safety initiatives,” said Jay Nardini, HCC Trustee and Iowa Community Colleges Trustees Board Chair. "As an attorney, I recognize the value of risk management and forging partnerships for maintaining a safe campus for students. This second annual Campus Safety and Security Summit will provide Community College Trustees and all of higher education with information on successful partnership practices.”

“Collaborating with our partners, including law enforcement agencies, healthcare providers, community leaders, and fellow higher education institutions to enhance safety on our campuses is paramount,” said Liang Chee Wee, Northeast Iowa Community College President and IACCP Chair.  “The Campus Safety and Security Summit is a valuable, concerted effort where resources and partnerships are committed to augment and increase campus security and incident prevention measures.”
